Strengths

The first chapter gives thorough information on choosing gluten-free foods. Gluten-containing and gluten-free ingredients are listed to help the reader decipher food labels. The relevant government labeling regulations (both Canada and US) is valuable information for the dietitian, but may be too complex for most clients. The table, “Gluten-free Diet by Food Groups” is particularly helpful. Foods allowed, not allowed and foods to question are listed. Each food to question has an explanatory note to guide the consumer in determining if the food is suitable for a gluten-free diet. The chapter concludes with tips to increase dietary fiber, iron, and calcium. Information on lactose intolerance is included.

Essential information on living well with a gluten-free diet is provided. Descriptions, practical use and nutrition information is given for many alternative grains. The tips for using these difficult grains reflect the author’s many years of helping clients adapt to a gluten-free diet.  Every-day recipes using ingredients that are available at most “health food stores” are included. The information on shopping for gluten-free products is an extremely valuable section. The extensive list of gluten-free products available would stimulate most appetites. Contact information for each of the gluten-free producers is provided.

Weakness

There are very few drawbacks to this book. Low-literacy clients may need assistance to understand some paragraphs. However, the extensive tables are easy to understand and they alone make this a valuable reference. Information on choosing gluten-free meals in restaurants and “non-food” sources of gluten is not included. The client may need additional information on these topics.
