The Food Allergy Summer Camp was started in 2004 as a partnership between Wendy Busse, The Allergy Asthma Information Association and the YWCA YoWoChAs Outdoor Education Center. This unique initiative provided an opportunity for children with severe food allergies to enjoy summer camp. In 2012, the Sherwood Park Celiac Support group joined the team so that children with celiac disease could attend the camp as well.

Description

The tenth annual Food Allergy & Celiac Summer Camp for children 6– 15 years of age will be held at the YWCA YoWoChAs Outdoor Education Centre (80 km west of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) from August 5th - 9th, 2013. The Allergy Asthma Information Association and the Sherwood Park Celiac Support Group have partnered with YWCA YoWoChAs Outdoor Education Center to provide an opportunity for children with severe food allergies or celiac disease to attend summer camp.


Menu


The special diet campers will participate in all camp activities. They will eat with their assigned groups, but receive a modified menu. The celiac campers will serve themselves from a gluten-free buffet. The food allergy campers will select their meals under the dietitian’s supervision. The allergy menu has been planned to accommodate restrictions for milk, egg, nut, fish/seafood and sesame seed. Other restrictions can usually be accommodated, but guardians must send any food that is not on the planned menu.

 

Medical Support

We are very fortunate to have Dr. Stuart Carr as the Medical Director for the Camp. Dr. Carr will determine the emergency medical procedures and will be on call during the camp. A medical specialist will be present at the camp to administer the medical protocol, if required, and assist the first aid specialist with administration of regular medication (e.g. asthma medication).

 

Registration
